Personal Biodata

Darrel Ray

Darrel W. Ray, Ed. D. is a graduate of George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University and holds a doctorate in counseling psychology. Since 1978, he has been a pioneer in the development of Self-Directed Work Teams in both union and non-union environments.

Dr. Ray specializes in the development of organizational cultures, partnering with leaders to develop horizontal accountability and create employee self-direction. The results consistently exceed expectations in many areas including quality, performance and retention. His approach has successfully been applied to organizations as diverse as, engineering, automotive, insurance, mental health and the printing industry. Dr. Ray continues to consult throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe utilizing his approach, which integrates seamlessly with Six Sigma, TQM, Lean Manufacturing and ISO9000.

Dr. Ray is certified by two national organizations as a trainer and holds certifications in Neurolinguistics as well. He is a professional member of the Association for Quality and Participation, American Psychological Association, and The American Society for Training and Development.

Dr. Ray developed the Team-Based Work System Survey, a standardized diagnostic instrument to measure the critical ingredients of effective teamwork and assess the team development points of strength and potential areas for improvement.

His published works include articles in a number of national journals: The Journal for Quality and Participation, Manage Magazine, Working Woman, Management World, Training and Development Journal, The Journal of Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Evaluation and Program Planning, NAPM Insights, Supervisory Management.

He has been interviewed and featured in numerous publications: Industry Week, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Employment Review, The Houston Chronicle, The Kansas City Business Journal, The Wall Street Journal, Black Enterprise Magazine. And, he has appeared on numerous radio and television programs across the nation.

Dr. Ray is the author of two books: Teaming Up: Making the Transition to a Self-Directed Team-Based Organization (McGraw-Hill), and The Performance Culture: Maximizing the Power of Teams (IPC Press).
